I'd argue that your sentiment is correct, but that the word should maybe be "character", or externally manifested, accomplishment or something.
Destiny, if you beleive in such a thing, isn't decided. It assumes the universe is in some way sentient (god, physically based, whatever your theory) and that things play out as they play out, and that's that.
